Simple Habits That Keep Your Rows Smooth, Secure, and Seamless Until Your Next Move-Up
Your install looked flawless when you walked out of the chair. Three weeks later the rows feel a little loose, a small tangle keeps forming near the beads, and you are wondering what went wrong. Usually, nothing did. Hidden wefts live on your head for six to eight weeks between move-ups, and what happens during those weeks matters just as much as the install itself. Thoughtful weft extension care is the difference between hair that still looks fresh at week seven and hair that needs a rescue appointment at week four. Guests who come to our Foxborough salon hear the same message from every stylist behind the chair: extension longevity is built at home, one small habit at a time.
None of it is complicated, either. Five weft extension care habits cover almost everything.
1. Weft Extension Care Begins at the Shampoo Bowl
Wash two to three times a week, not daily. Hidden wefts never receive natural oil from your scalp, so frequent washing dries them out faster than your natural hair.
When you do wash, work sulfate-free shampoo into your scalp with the pads of your fingers and let the suds rinse down the lengths. Never pile your hair on top of your head and scrub. That motion twists the rows and creates matting right at the base.
Condition from the mid-lengths down and keep conditioner off the beads themselves. Buildup at the attachment points loosens the hold and makes your next move-up appointment longer than it needs to be.
2. Brush Like Your Extensions Depend on It
Because it does. Brush morning and night at minimum, using a loop brush or a soft extension brush.
Start at the ends and work upward in sections, holding the hair above the row with your free hand so you are never tugging directly on the beads. Once you reach the row, brush gently over it rather than through it.
Never brush soaking wet hair. Wait until it is damp, spray a leave-in detangler, and work in small sections. Skipping this for even two or three days is the fastest way to undo good weft extension care.
3. Build a Sleep Routine That Protects the Rows
Eight hours of friction every night adds up. Go to bed with completely dry hair, because damp hair pressed against a pillowcase means matting by morning.
Braid loosely in one or two low braids, or twist everything into a soft bun secured with a fabric scrunchie. Add a silk or satin pillowcase and you have solved most overnight tangling with a single purchase.
4. Use Heat With Intention
Extension hair cannot repair itself the way your natural hair does. Every pass of a flat iron is permanent, which is why heat management protects extension longevity more reliably than any product on your shelf.
Keep tools at 350 degrees or below, always use a heat protectant, and let your hair air dry to roughly 80 percent before you pick up a blow dryer. Point the nozzle down the hair shaft rather than up into the rows.
Keep hot tools away from the beads entirely. Metal conducts heat, and a hot bead can damage the natural hair wrapped inside it.
5. Give Your Weft Extension Care Routine a Weekly Reset
Once a week, apply a hydrating mask from the mid-lengths down and let it sit for ten minutes.
Then check your rows in a mirror. Run a finger along each one and feel for beads that have slid down, wefts that feel loose, or spots that pull tight against the scalp. Catching a slipping bead at week three is a five-minute fix. Catching it at week seven usually is not.
Where Your Stylist Fits Into the Picture
Good habits at home carry most of the weft extension care load, but not all of it. Bond-building services on the menu at our Foxborough salon, including K18 and Olaplex bond treatments, rebuild the natural hair that carries the weight of your rows, and that foundation is what real extension longevity depends on.
A professional shampoo and blow dry is worth booking before events, too. Someone else’s hands can reach the back rows properly, and the smoothing lasts far longer than anything most of us manage at home. If you color your natural hair, keep those appointments on schedule as well, since visible regrowth draws the eye straight to the attachment points.
Your stylist would always rather see you for a ten-minute check than a two-hour repair. Ask for one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim with hidden wefts?
Yes, with preparation. Saturate your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner before you get in, braid it, and rinse thoroughly afterward. Chlorine and salt water both pull moisture out of extension hair and can shift blonde tones brassy or green.
Will my wefts look shorter after a few months?
They should not, but the ends will need a light dusting at each move-up. Extension hair wears at the tips from daily brushing and styling, and trimming a quarter inch keeps the blend looking intentional.
My scalp itches at the rows. Is something wrong?
Mild tightness for a day or two after an install is normal. Ongoing itching usually points to product buildup or a dry scalp rather than a reaction. A clarifying rinse at the scalp often solves it. If it persists, call your stylist instead of picking at the rows.
